Organizers say they’re calling attention to federal plans to expand immigration detention in the Bay Area.
Hundreds of walkers, families and immigrant‑rights advocates are expected to take part in the Northern California Coalition for Just Immigration Reform’s three‑day “Caminata for Immigrant Rights,” beginning in Napa.
The group will march more than 50 miles to Dublin, demanding a pathway to citizenship and an end to ICE enforcement operations in the Bay Area.
They also want the federal government to cancel plans to convert the former women’s prison in Dublin into an immigration detention center.
Advocates say the proposal is part of a broader push to expand detention sites in the region, including potential facilities in Gilroy and even Alcatraz.
Renee Saucedo, leader of the Sonoma County Sanctuary Coalition, said she believes a large‑scale action is necessary.
"It's an abomination what's happening here in our region and in the rest of the country and If we don't stop it, nobody will," Saucedo said. "So, we have to conduct these dramatic actions to show the urgency that all of these practices and policies under the current administration have to stop immediately."
The walk begins at Napa High School on Saturday, continues through Vallejo and El Cerrito, and ends Monday evening with a rally outside the former Dublin prison.
